According to statistics from Dice, the past year has shown 131% growth in jobs for mobile app developers with top earners getting as much as 5000/year. It’s a hot market, and it can pay well. But even if you don’t know a mobile OS today, you can learn, and break in. More and more companies are making serious financial commitments to mobile app development and are therefore no longer just testing the waters with contract jobs. They’re hiring more full time positions. At Silicon Valley Code Camp, Leslie Stevens-Huffman gave a session on how to break into mobile app development. Here are a series of tips she offered up to help you make the transition to mobile app development and land the job you want. Tips for landing a mobile app development job • Even if you’ve never built a mobile app, if you know C++, Objective-C, C#, and Java you have transferrable programming skills. • General transferrable skills include basic development experience, a bachelor’s degree, creativity, communications skills, and showing how your work can have business value, impact. • New competencies you’ll have to build include Mobile OSes and hands-on app development experience, mobile UI, error free code, and the ability to implement APIs plus adapt web apps. • Attitude goes a long way. You don’t need to have everything that’s required because anything you don’t know you can learn through training. But if you have a positive eager attitude and you want to learn, then they’ll hire you on that …

Google Tech Talks March, 5 2008 ABSTRACT Vannevar Bush’s 1945 article, “As We May Think,” has been much celebrated as a central inspiration for the development of hypertext and the World Wide Web. Less attention, however, has been paid to Bush’s motivation for imagining a new generation of information technologies; it was his hope that more powerful tools, by automating the routine aspects of information processing, would leave researchers and other professionals more time for creative thought. But now, more than sixty years later, it seems clear that the opposite has happened, that the use of the new technologies has contributed to an accelerated mode of working and living that leaves us less to think, not more. In this talk I will explore how this state of affairs has come about and what we can do about it. Speaker: David M. Levy David Levy earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University in 1979 and a Diploma in Calligraphy and Bookbinding from the Roehampton Institute (London) in 1983. For more than fifteen years he was a researcher at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where his work, described in “Scrolling Forward: Making Sense of Documents in the Digital Age” (Arcade, 2001), centered on exploring the transition from paper and print to digital. During the year 2005-2006, he was the holder of the Papamarkou Chair in Education and Technology at the Library of Congress. A professor at the UW Information School since 2000-2001, he has been …

Google Tech Talk September 24, 2009 slides: www.slideshare.net Web Exponents: www.youtube.com ABSTRACT Presented by Chris Anderson. CouchDB’s web API and offline replication capabilities make it ideally suited to power a sea-change in the relationships between users and service providers. I’ll give a 10000 foot overview of CouchDB, as well as discuss the benefits and challenges of writing applications that can be replicated transparently from the cloud to local machines. Chris Anderson is an Apache CouchDB committer and co-author of the forthcoming O’Reilly book “CouchDB: The Definitive Guide”. He is a director of couch.io, offering commercial hosting, support, consulting, and custom development. He enjoys working on JavaScript CouchApps which can be peer-replicated just like any other data. Chris is obsessed with bending the physics of the web to give control back to users.

Custom software development is a high risk business. Even with sixty years of experience under our belts we sill manage to waste millions of dollars on failed projects. It doesn’t have to be that way on your project. Software developers have known for many years that broad user engagement in writing software requirements substantially increases the probability of success. In this talk Les Chambers looks at one of the barriers to user engagement: language. As a user, how do you tell your story to a technical person? How do you shed light on your real world in a way that will support the development of a complete, correct, unambiguous and verifiable statement of requirement. Citing the “use case” as an example, Les looks at the thought processes, frameworks, models and modes of expression that nontechnical people can employ to improve the accuracy and efficiency of their dialog with software developers.

Google Tech Talk August 26, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Soren Johnson. Artificial intelligence is crucial to any strategy game, providing a compelling opponent for solo play. While many of the challenges of AI development are technical, significant design challenges exist as well. Can the AI behave like a human? Should it? Should the game design be adjusted to accommodate the limitations of the AI? How do we make the AI fun? Should the AI cheat? If so, how much? Do we even want the AI to win? This session suggests some possible answers to these questions using the “Civilization” series as a case study. Ultimately, developers must choose between a “good” AI and a “fun” one, with an understanding of the trade-offs inherent when deciding between the two. Soren Johnson was the lead designer and AI programmer for Sid Meier’s Civilization IV. After working at Firaxis Games for seven years, Soren joined EA Maxis in 2007 to work on Spore as a lead designer/programmer. He is currently building web-based games with EA2D, such as the moddable strategystation.com and other unannounced projects. He also writes a design column for Game Developer Magazine and is on the GDC Advisory Board. His thoughts on game design can be found at www.designer-notes.com.
